This is Lady Jane's story. Lady Jane was sent to Stranje house by her older brothers after her parents' deaths. She thinks of herself as plain and average and can't figure out why her friends love her. However, she is being groomed to be a mastermind since she has a strong ability to plan and think three or four steps ahead of everyone. This comes in quite handy since the young ladies of Stranje House and the patronesses of British society are all spies trying to keep Napoleon from conquering England in this alternate history story.

Lady Jane also has a secret that she has been keeping since just before her parents died. This secret makes her believe that she needs to stay away from London and society or face changes she doesn't want in her life.

Lady Jane is also falling in love with inventor Alexander Sinclair who is a brash American who has developed a working steam boat which could alter the course of the war but only if they can get the prototype to London and the Navy before it is captured by the evil Lady Daneska and her partner the Ghost.

The banter between Jane and Alexander was entertaining as the two sparred. I liked the relationships between the girls at Stranje House. They have become the family that Jane never had since hers were dissolute gamesters who never valued her.

Fans of alternate history and intrepid young women will enjoy this third book in the Stranje House series.

REFUGE FOR MASTERMINDS is a steadily moving historical romance with delightful characters, plenty of danger, and a well plotted story that is sure to engage the reader from beginning to end. Highly recommended to historical romance readers who enjoy the mix of espionage and a boarding school to London setting!

I love this series! I particularly loved the banter between Jane and Alexander in this third book. It was so much fun and definitely made me laugh. They were both marvelous characters! I also adored their romance. Then there were the other characters, particularly these girls who have become like sisters. They have their own strengths and weaknesses and love interests, and care deeply for each other.

I love that each of the books in this series focuses more on one of the Stranje girls, but still weaves in all the characters and an overarching plot as they face Napoleon and his spies. The plot had some adventure and action, as well as a fairly constant feel of danger. The ending was climatically intense, as to be expected, and I loved how it all came together. It also concluded with a decent resolution while also leading quite nicely to the next book, which I am highly anticipating!

My only grievance would be that I didn't completely understand Jane's misgivings in trusting Miss Stranje. I also was a little confused by her not taking advantage of dismissing a contract until later on for some misguided reason or other. At least she figured things out in time.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was another fantastic read and addition to this series! I enjoyed it from beginning to end!

I love these books. So well written, I can't put them down. It's wonderful to get the 360 degree view of what goes on at the Stranje House from the viewpoint of each character in each book. I recommend for readers of all ages.
I look forward to more on this series! Each written from the pov of a different student, these books are fast-paced and fun to read. The characters are enjoyable, just can't say enough. Highly recommend, be sure to read in order.
As cover, headmistress Miss Stranje decides to host a coming-out ball for the young ladies in London so they can investigate and prevent potential threats that might endanger England. Will they be able to protect Alexander and his ship from Napoleon's deadly spies? The chase is exciting and the romance is sweet! I love the overlap of characters and how the girls are growing.
Smart, strong heroines are always fun to read about. Add in the interesting eccentricities of each young woman, their evolving teamwork and national security skullduggery of the British variety and you have an absorbing historical mystery.
I am eager for the next adventure to begin. Too bad months of writing can be read in a few hours! Authors can't keep up with their fans appetites for more.

Can I just say how much I love first person writing??!?!?! It is fascinating, in a series such as this one, to get the "inside scoop" on what is really going on in each of the girls' brains. So much fun. I am really enjoying how each book puts the focus on one of the girls and how they got to be where they are today. The stories are brilliantly interwoven and make each girl shine. Along with the lovely ladies are the swoon-worthy men. Each is unique and perfectly suited for their "unusual" girl. The author excels at the #FlirtingNotFlirting that takes place and the conversations make this old lady blush with anticipation.

I am really enjoying this series and know that it will be one of the few book series that I will HAVE TO revisit when the series ends, just so I can relive all the magic again. ;)
