4.5. I first want to start off with a warning. I think this book has been mis-categorized as a psychological thriller or mystery, but it is neither. If you’re expecting GG or GOTT you’ll be disappointed. There IS a central “mystery,” which really isn’t much of a mystery at all. But the reveal, so to speak, is not what the book is about, it really just serves as a theme to guide the stories.

I agree with other reviewers who liken this to a Luanne Moriarty book, where the story is really about the characters and their lives and the mystery in the background is helping to move their stories along. I loved all the characters (except a certain one, of course,) and I love how she weaved together the characters and invites you into their lives and community. Like Big Little Lies, you will find yourself wanting to live in the neighborhood and be part of the group. It manages to be cozy while maintaining a realistic narrative. It’s the type of book where I don’t want to leave the characters, I want to keep being part of their daily lives.

The story never dragged for me, and while at times the characters did things I disagreed with (cough, cough, Izzy,) I liked that they had their heads on straight and recognized their own flaws. It made them human instead of caricatures. All-in-all, this was a nice cleanse from all the psychological thrillers I’ve been reading, and I can’t wait till read more from this author.

Definitely recommend for fans of Luanne Moriarty

Not That I Could Tell A Novel Jessica Strawser 9781250107886 Books Reviews

Our book club choose this book due to the very misleading stellar reviews. A sophomoric effort at best. There is no character development or sense of place. The characters are so one dimensional that even those of us who could force ourselves to finish this book agreed it was poorly written and not worth the time it took to read. Dull and boring. Because there is no character development we never know or care about the cardboard characters and there is no incentive to continue reading. Look elsewhere if you want a good read.
I wanted so bad to like this book. The plot was straight out of an episode of desperate housewives. A woman and her kids go missing, and the lead suspect is the ex husband. It sounds great, and that's just the first 50 pages. Then nothing happens. The entire remainder of the book is just a group of women navigating everyday problems. Every now and then there will be a new revelation, but it isn't anything major, and you can easily see where the book is headed.
Great book that shows the lengths friends will go for each other! It makes you really wonder if you really know your neighbors.
Since the character of Kristin is gone when we arrive, the reader gets to know her through the eyes and thoughts of her neighbors.
Paul’s character is just “zigged” enough to keep us guessing.
Splendid ending in so many ways.

It took too long to get the story going. I almost stopped reading it but I have a thing about finishing books. There are many other books more worthy of your attention!
Jessica Strawer’s Not That I Could Tell captures the dynamics of a charming small town world rocked by scandal. The morning after a girl’s night out Kristin, along with her two young children, goes missing. Does Kristin’s husband (from whom she’s separated) have anything to do with her and their children’s disappearance?

Strawser’s narrative offers a steady pulse of suspense. Satisfying ending I literally gasped at the final scenes that reveal the truth surrounding all questions posed throughout the story.

If you like the novels Big Little Lies or Gone Girl then you’ll also like Not That I Could Tell.
I really loved this book. I was guessing the whole way through and kept changing my guesses on what really happened. This is one of those books that you pick up and it is hard to put it down. I started it Saturday and finished it by Sunday evening. I don't like rehashing what the story is about because you can read that for yourself. But this IS a Very Good book and one worth reading. Will definitely read more by this author. Absolutely loved it.
