I have read the whole series and this wasn't my favorite. I liked this book but did not love it. The cast of characters remain the same but they had "bit parts". The characters along with Kate made the books so good. I did not like the ending. The book was about secrets and what they can do to people.
There is a serial sexual predator among the Amish. The book does keep you guessing about who is the culprit of the crime of murder. The why becomes clear early on.
While this is a series you could read this book without reading the others. My recommendation is to read the early books first. They were really great! Hope Mona, Tomasetti, Pickles, Glock and Skid have larger parts in the books to come. Even the mayor did not have a part in this book.

If a seventeen-year-old Amish girl hangs herself in the prologue and six months later in Chapter One an eighteen-year-old Amish boy is murdered, does that suggest anything? For most mystery fans, you bet it does. But if you think you have this story figured out by Chapter Two, think again. As Kate Burkholder investigates the murder and gets more information, everything becomes much, much, much more complicated, and more and more people become involved. This is the most compelling book I've read in quite a while. Dishes piled up in the sink and chores went undone because I didn't want to leave it. Linda Castillo is one of my favorite authors--maybe second only to Jonathan Kellerman--and I've read all ten of her Kate Burkholder books. This one is up there with the best. My only complaint is that Glock, one of Kate's officers and one of my favorite characters, barely appears in the story. I missed him. But A Gathering of Secrets is still a wonderful reading experience for mystery fans, and it shouldn't be missed.
I wouldn't consider this a standalone book, that being said I have read the entire series so far and am a huge fan of them. However, this was not my favorite. The mystery is good and there are a lot of twists and turns and they do a pretty good job of holding on to who committed the actual arson till the end but there was just something really troubling about this book. It was definitely darker than some of the others and the secrets and ways in which the Amish deal with things that happen in this novel really made me mad which may have been why I had so much trouble with it.

I do thoroughly enjoy these books, I love the way Kate is separate but still very much admires so much of the Amish culture, the simple ways. I also love the relationship she has with Tomessetti her FBI boyfriend and though he is fighting his own demons he respects Kate and knows what she needs so much of the time. Overall I really like this series and I'm not disappointed I read this but it just didn't reel me in the way some of the others have.

FINAL DECISION A great mystery that is deeply grounded in character and relationships rather than forensics and clues. Kate is deeply involved emotionally in this one and I really like seeing how her character has grown in the series. This one has lots of twists and turns and I couldn't put it down.

THE STORY The burning of an Amish barn brings Chief of Police Kate Burkholder to the scene, but the arson case turns to a murder investigation when the body of an eighteen year old boy is found inside. As Kate tries to determine who would want to kill a young man who by all accounts was a hard worker and a good person, Kate begins to discover that there are secrets that no one wants to talk about which might be a motive for murder.

OPINION This one was a page turner. The book has lots of twists and things are not what they appear. This book is deeply entrenched in the personal. The secrets that people keep and the fears and shame and guilt that surround those secrets. As the story winds its way through to its conclusion, I liked that the sense of right and wrong is challenged on all sides. People who seem sympathetic might not be. People who seem good make terrible choices and take terrible actions.

These books work best for me when Kate is deeply involved not only on a professional, but also a personal level and this book succeeds in that. Kate is fully engaged as the mystery brings out many parts of her life. The story feels personal even if Kate doesn't know the people involved.

I thought the mystery was very good and while I had glimpses of the ultimate resolution, I really didn't put it together until the end. And there were plenty of shocking surprises along the way to keep me glued to the pages.

Beyond the mystery, there were also several developments with the ongoing characters that I enjoyed. And there is a real sense of growth of these characters which I appreciated. For readers of the series, it is nice to see that events and time change these characters and they are not kept in stasis to just solve crimes.

WORTH MENTIONING This book has some good moments between Kate and Tomasetti for those who are interested in their relationship.

CONNECTED BOOKS A GATHERING OF SECRETS is the tenth book in the Kate Burkholder series. This is a series of separate mystery stories. There are overarching character developments, but this book can be read as a standalone.

I've read most of Linda Castillo's Kate Burkholder mysteries and listened to them as audiobooks. I've really enjoyed the series. I was eager to purchase this latest book as soon as it came out. Unfortunately, I have to say that this is the weakest book in the series by far. It seems more like recycled, random parts strung together rather than a cohesive, compelling, and interesting mystery. Once again, there's a fire. Once again, an Amish girl commits suicide. Once again, we hear about Kate's past. What's lacking this time out is Castillo's normally intricate plotting. I figured out the likely suspects almost immediately. There was literally NO suspense. Also, when Kate discovered the truth of what happened, she did no follow up with the fire victim's family, which I found odd given the circumstances surrounding the death and the victim, himself.

Honestly, I felt like the author just phoned this book in. She seemed bored with her characters and with the Amish culture. I wish I hadn't wasted my money.
