This novel was so incredibly authentic that about 50 pages into it, I actually Googled Daisy Jones to see if somehow, this band were real and I didn’t know about them.

I love, loved, LOVED every page and it’s already a contender for Top Ten of 2019 for me – and 2019 hasn’t even begun. Here are some of the reasons why:

It’s REAL – the good, the bad, the ugly: As someone who truly “came of age” in the 70s, this book really caught the vibe. The book captures a time before sound-effects-gone-wild dominated the music industry. Taylor Jenkins Reid captures the atmosphere superbly.

It’s INSIGHTFUL: These are characters who are passionate about their music, their lives, and each other. They yearn, they love, they bleed. They experience the push and pull between the lure of temptation and staying on the right path. They don’t always succeed, but wow do they try.

It’s INTELLIGENT: This isn’t the same hashed-over story of a band’s meteoric rise and plunge back to earth. Billy Dunne is an artist with issues, sure, but he’s also a person who survives despite his instincts. “My instincts said to run toward the chaos. But my better brain sent me home to my woman.” Daisy Jones is a gorgeous pill-popping immensely talented singer, but she’s also an artist with a complicated inner life and a yearning for a man she cannot have. Every single band member comes alive in this book.

It’s EMOTIVE: There were scenes and lines that made me sit there and cry. Or laugh. Or cheer. As a character-driven reader, I look for characters that could step outside the pages. I felt as if I knew these band members.

It’s ORIGINAL: The fictional book is set up like an oral history compiled and edited from conversations and transcripts, with a surprise at the end. Not only does the author invent a band but also the story behind it – and there’s even a playlist that accompanies it.

I can go on and on but I’ll end this review with two words: Read it! I promise, you’ll be hooked.

Daisy Jones The Six A Novel Taylor Jenkins Reid 9781524798628 Books Reviews

I think this book is going to be a big hit. It is cleverly done in an interview type format and was very engaging, I read it all in one Saturday. Daisy Jones is a groupie in LA during the ‘70’s. She has a talent for writing songs and singing and wants to be a musician and not a groupie. The Six are an up and coming rock band and Daisy is who they need to become rock stars. Not everyone in the band is pleased to work with Daisy. They all have their own personal issues and Daisy is bright and talented, strong-willed but a train wreck due to her partying and drug use.
Several times while reading this I kept wanting to go online and look these people up, they felt so real! I can’t believe the author was able to make this book so engrossing using the format that she did. I was really hooked and after I finished reading it, I watched Almost Famous, a movie I had not seen before but suddenly I really wanted too. The music in the book seems so real as well and the author has lyrics at the end for all the songs the “band” made with Daisy. There is a playlist to go with the book but I haven’t checked it out yet. I truly enjoyed this book and was so caught up in their world. I highly recommend this book. I’m going to go read the author’s previous work, she is so talented.
This is a book for those who love music and for those fascinated by the behind-the-scenes look at the intricate interplay of creative personalities trying to make a life, make a hit, and make it big. It's a very enjoyable and engaging ride. As another reviewer commented, the description of the creative process was fascinating - a good look at the work behind producing polished works, not just some raw alchemical process of inspiration. Although I wish there were a bit more to distinguish the various voices of each of the interviewees, I adored the comic genius of the one-note Warren; his contributions always made me chuckle.

The author could easily have focused solely on the two lead singers, to the detriment of the back stories of the other band members. I loved how she would throw in off-handed tributes to the other members of the team (Warren, Eddie, and Pete) from critics, which underscored how charisma is important, but the music would not be the same with musicians who were not equally excellent in their own rights.

By turns touching and wise, Reid weaves together a cohesive narrative with in-depth character studies. Although the main story is a love story of sorts, there are layers of subplots beneath the main plot line which make for a rich and rewarding reading experience. The descriptions of the music, the lyrics, the voices, and the sounds could only have been written down by someone who is passionate about music. Every reader will come away from this book with a perception of what the music sounded like, what Daisy and Billy looked and sounded like, but we will have one common theme - each of us will hear some exquisite, raw and heartbreaking, pulse-racing music in our heads which can't be matched or mirrored in reality. As much as I'd love to see this novel realized on screen, I also dread the thought that the soundtrack won't live up to the intensity of the music which Reid evoked in our own imaginations.

I don't often give five stars for books, but this was an excellent book, fun to read from start to finish. Her characters were well-drawn, even if the interview format would have benefited for more distinction between the voices. That is a very small cavil. There were many wise moments in the book. It's a story about strength in imperfection, about the choices you make and the priorities you set which helps to set your course in life. My favorite line was spoken by Camila "I think you have to have faith in people before they earn it. Otherwise, it's not faith, right?"
